Academia Vs Industry

Often, it’s regarded that the skills and knowledge inherited through your academics are enough to face the real world. Some might believe in this, while others beg to differ. It’s a mixed affair, but once an individual faces the challenges that are thrown at them when they join an industry, it's evident that things learned in academics aren’t enough to face industry requirements.

The demand that any industry requires to keep fluctuating is based on how the market reacts. You can never predict what they would want freshers or graduates to learn in their academics. But academics play an essential role in giving fresher a good fighting chance in getting settled in industries. Thus, if universities want their students to settle down in a company, without any hurdles, then the following pointers could help them out.

Changing of the syllabus - Universities these days fail to recognize the importance of syllabus and what students are learning. Keeping an outdated curriculum denies a student from learning the real-world problems and coming up with practical solutions for the same. Thus, it is required for every university to alter their syllabus every 4-5 years based on the industry requirements. Such that students can easily understand all the things that are going on around them when they join a particular industry.

Introductions of soft skills - Soft skills are the main area where academics don’t offer anything at all. Often universities believe that soft skills are not valued as much as the technical and practical knowledge that the student should have. And fail to include it in their course. But it’s vital as communication is the essential part of any student. Industries require soft skills as it’s a homologated part of any fresher to have these crucial skillsets for companies to consider them employable.

Mock interviews and practice rounds - Academics only give you knowledge about the course that you might have opted. But doesn’t give you an essential take on how industries these days hire an individual. Universities have to include mock interview rounds and other courses related to the entire hiring process such that they have a good chance of knowing what needs to be done when they appear for a real one. Furthermore, these skillsets will enable an individual to learn more and more about how they can improve themselves in the hiring process.

Consulting industries on change - Often, academics being outdated might not reflect on the university and would be stagnant for several years. Thus, approaching relevant industries to provide consultation on the syllabus and academics on how change can be possible goes a long way in ensuring that students are ready to face any situation given to them when they join an industry. Also, universities could conduct seminars by calling enterprises to ensure that students are aware of the change that is taking place and gear up to adhere to the demands of the change.

Thus, the above-given pointers could prove to be essential in ensuring that academics are compliant with industry requirements. And students gain proper knowledge and skills in fulfilling industry norms and regulations.
